of ubiquity & necessity

Gotham_usage

last week, i saw the Gotham type family used on a lame car dealership ad. i can't even count the number of "web 2.0" sites created between the years 2008 and 2009 that use the damn thing. i then and there stated the typeface had a great run, but i felt it had reached market saturation. gotham is finally played out. i don't ever want to use it again.

today, sketching out logo ideas for a rebrand, i really needed something clean and strikingly modern, and the curves had to be very round...

shit.

trent reznor, here and there

Trent Reznor and fellow How To Destroy Angels collaborator & bandmate
Atticus Ross just released a 5 track sampler from their score of David
Fincher's film: The Social Network.

Initial thoughts: I would love to explore a maze of dark alleys
listening to this... the selection is full of dark ambiance similar to
NIN: Ghosts, ominous rhythms & even some beats reminiscent of NIN's
The Fragile. As a big fan of Reznor's more ambient work on both the
Ghosts album and most recently How to Destroy Angels, I definitely got
into this. WARNING: Not recommended for die-hards still looking for
the next Terrible Lie. Trent has clearly moved on and evolved... so
should you.

Thanks to Pitchfork for the link, you can download the sampler here:

crow life.

i am currently putting together ideas with my friend, the disgruntled crow, for a series of illustrated gothic and dramatically-inspired graphic-t's and hoodies. you can read the fairly melodramatic art description below (hide the razors):

pulling apart the blackened remnants of pain, regret & loss, we find new skin, new friends, a new life... this new life changes, grows black wings; a silhouette on the sunlight, forgoing all else in its shadow. disintegrated fears, transformation of self, brought to new life with expressive design. this is crowlife: for a life that reflects art...
(download)
what is compelling about this series is that it is inspired by the idea of a deeply passionate love affair between two very dark and eccentric gothic characters who are in all ways spiritually bound to each other, an intriguing relationship that most creative and emotionally deep individuals only dream or write or paint about. it is a rare case of life reflecting art, and not the other way around. the crowlife series is one feeble attempt at documenting that epic journey.

more to come, we promise...

critters (scene 1: a forceful imposition)

good evening, funny (looking) little creatures of the forest. i swear this is only a test...

Blackhorizon

...or is it? actually, black horizon is the first of my prose pieces that will be haphazardly injected into the storytelling mechanisms (or whatever the fudge sundae we call it) project with my good friend, unfavorable owl, who will be illustrating figures and imagery to complement my stories. how delightful!

good lord it's 3am. i sort of hate you all right now...
